Dare to be different

Business ownership is not always an easy thing, especially when you are a small one, and you as the owner have to become master of all the business aspects. If the last year has taught me anything, it’s that the ‘fun’ stuff (ie the chatting to customers, the sourcing new stock, and the website rearranges) account for a depressingly small number of my weekly hours. Many more of them are spent looking at spreadsheets wishing I’d paid a little more attention during Maths. Rather than reading Melody Maker. Which is mostly what I did. Ah, the ‘90s, and Miss Burgess’s lessons. Heavy on the indie, light on algebra.

But the last year has also taught me that where I can, I need to focus on what I’m good at in the world of business… and as Harriet and Rose grows… well the first thing on my list has been help with the accounts. Transpires I’m not the only one who hates doing them, and there is a reason there are so many accountants in the world (I say this is someone married to one)… business owners are always happy to outsource their accounting , and as quickly as is humanly possible.

This new freeing up of time (ha ha), has enabled me to do what I want to do a bit more, and that is to drive Harriet and Rose forward. Onwards and upwards, not looking back and reflecting, but working out where I am going next.

Over the last quarter of 2020, I organised The Small Business Pop Up. I met the most amazing group of people, and it really reinforced that as a business owner, I wanted to have more local businesses and creators on the website. But I also wanted to have a point of difference.

See, I want to support small makers, but I do also love having something on the website that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s why Kota candles pour into Limited Edition ceramic vessels for us, it’s why we put together a selection of products from across the island into our corporate hampers… and it’s why we persuaded Abi Overland to work with us on a Limited Edition drop of some of her amazing prints. But with a difference!

Whilst we love monochrome (and have two of Abi’s prints already adorning our walls), we also love a bit of colour, and Abi has reimagined three of her prints in a beautiful palette just for Harriet and Rose, and she’s called it ‘The Undertones Collection’.

Featuring three of her best-selling prints, The Arches, A Cat’s Dream and Waiting, there is a strict run of 25 of each print in A3 or A2 sizes. Printed to order, they are only available through Harriet and Rose, and frankly, given the speed at which her last Limited Edition prints flew out, if you snooze, you could very well lose.

We love supporting local businesses and working with them to create something that you can’t get anywhere else. And we love that they are printed here in island, making them truly Jersey designed and made.

They go live tomorrow - Wednesday 24th March.
