Things to do in Jersey, that people in Jersey do! - The Food Blog

Jersey is the island that we’re lucky enough to call home. Having been here for over six years now, even on an island that’s only nine miles by five, there are still places to go, restaurants to discover and new beaches to stumble across.

If it’s your first time visiting Jersey, then there are definitely some well-known places to make sure you visit, but with so many visitors coming into the shop and asking us where to go and what to do (and where to pick up dinner), it felt like a great time to do a blog post on the Harriet & Rose guide to Jersey. And we have reached out to the community too, and come up with some cracking suggestions.

For the first part in this blog series (places to visit, shopping and beaches all to come) we are showcasing the finest places that you can eat. We’ll be candid, it’s been extraordinarily hard to narrow down the options. We thought we’d got it done, and then had to add a whole other category for coffee and cake that you can grab and go with (and take to the nearest beach).

Even if you’re a regular visitor new places are popping up all the time. And rather than run the risk of not finding them, we hope that you’ll find our guide helpful, and please do add your suggestions in the comments - we’re always extremely happy to have a reason to visit more places!

Best for Brunch

The Good Egg at Havre des Pas - a great central lunch spot. Just out of St Helier and overlooking the beach, it makes for the perfect Brunch spot after a bracing dip in the Havre des Pas Lido. Dog friendly too.

Locke’s - Bringing modern, delicious and brilliantly named dishes to St Helier, and our personal coffee fuel several days of the week. Our own personal recommendation goes out to the Notorious B.L.T (with fried egg). You will have no regrets.

Plemont Cafe - as we always say, CHECK THE TIDES before venturing to the wild wild North West and heading to Plemont. One of the most outstanding beaches on the island, this is one to only visit at low tide, else you won’t even make it onto the sand. If you rock up a bit early though, the cafe has the most delicious brunch options, and if you get the right table, picture perfect views.

La Bouche - Back to St Helier now, and the market. If you’re into your food it’s worth heading to the market. From fresh produce to an abundance of amazing places to grab and go some lunch, cakes, or ingredients (plus flowers). La Bouche is right in the centre and is always buzzing.

Hank Marvin at Rondels - if you want to eat before or after you do your weekly shop, then Hank Marvin might be for you. Generous portions, and absolutely lovely brunch.

Nude Food - For the ultimate bare-foot chic in walking distance of St Aubin, Nude Food on the Beach is the perfect spot. Whether it’s a smoothie bowl, or the classic Avo on toast, it’s a healthy restaurant with a view. Plus great coffee, juices and smoothies. We almost feel healthier by just writing about it!

Best for Casual Dinner

Awabi - one of St Helier’s greatest new additions, Awabi has been open just over a year. In that time, they’ve threatened to remove the spicy chicken wings from the menu, but good sense won out! Definitely have the chicken wings. And book ahead. This is no longer a well-kept secret. The secret is not only out, but booking is essential.

The Thai at Gorey Pier (BYO) - Right at the end of Gorey Pier is Cafe Du Port. A Thai takeaway/eat in restaurant that is best visited at high tide, ideally on a summer’s evening. It’s BYO, and the wait for food can be extremely variable (15mins to 1hour plus), but it’s an idyllic spot, and so long as you’re not driving, you can just keep on drinking that rose or beer whilst you wait.

Portelet Bay Cafe - one of the reasons we moved to Jersey! Perfect pizza on the perfect beach. Do be aware that access is down quite a lot of steps - we love that it’s a little bit tricky to get to - but if accessibility is tricky, then the steps may cause access issues.

Best for Sunday Lunch

Upstairs at Anley - one of our favourite St Helier spots. Whilst we love nothing more than a Friday after-work cocktail with a side of the potatoes (if you know, you know), their Sunday lunch offering is becoming almost legendary. Do ensure you book

The Moorings - Whilst the saying (incorrectly) says that West is Best, the East is upping its game on a very regular basis. The Moorings has been fully refurbished to offer dinner and rooms. And Sunday lunch as well.

Best for Cocktails (with a side of food)

Watchmaker - One of the new firm favourites near the market, with an excellent wine list, charcuterie and cocktails, this is a great evening haunt.

Porters Store - A recent addition to St Helier, the Porters Store is a little bit hidden away. But that’s one of the reasons we love it!

Upstairs at Anley - already featured under our Sunday Lunches, their cocktails deserve a separate entry. And change monthly.

Best Bacon Butty

Rhona’s - Rhona has personally been responsible for saving us from a fate worse than a middle-aged hangover on many, many occasions. She also does a great crab sandwich. Though the aforementioned hangover cure is a bacon, sausage and egg on Portuguese. And an extra sausage for the dog.

The Hungry Man - Having been voted one of the best bacon sandwiches in the British Isles, this again has cured many hangovers (and the size of their ice-creams in the summer has to be seen to be believed). Hop over the steps behind and take a low tide dip if you really want to earn the sandwich/cure the hangover. A sea dip is always a good ides.

The Hideout - Situated at the Corbiere end of St Ouen this is the perfect spot to pick up a burger or bacon sandwich.

Best for Fine Dining

Number 10 - one of our favourites. Booking is essential, and you can choose between the upstairs dining room, or the more intimate bar downstairs. There’s also an excellent gin and cocktail menu.

La Capannina - A Jersey institution… that we’ve still never been to, but when we asked for Jersey places to eat was mentioned a lot. With a trolley of desserts, and more than a nod to ‘80s Italian Restaurants (and we mean that in a good way), booking is essential.

Samphire - with beautiful interiors, Samphire is always a wonderful place for a special meal. With an intimate atmosphere and great service, it makes the perfect place for a special occasion.

And finally… On the go coffee and cake

In town: Lockes, Dandy’s, Down Dog and Cargo

Out East: The Seahorse Cafe (Gorey), Ransoms

Up North: Mad Mary’s at Bouley Bay (the carrot cake and Mad Mary’s hot chocolate!)

Out West: El Tico, Common Ground

You can of course add your recommendations below! This is not an exhaustive list. Though it has been exhausting compiling it….!
